The
city of Dnepropetrovsk / Dnipropetrovsk is situated on the Dnipro
River about 500km south of Ukraine's capital Kiev. Large and
beautiful, Dnepropetrovsk
is a very rich city with character, culture, and soul, and has some
of the most friendly and kind people you could ever wish to meet.
Founded in 1776
and named Ekaterinoslav by the Russian Prince Potemkin by
order of the Empress of the Russian Empire Catherine II, and renamed
to Dnepropetrovsk in 1926, now the city is one of the biggest
centers of Ukraine with more than with 1,1 million inhabitants. It is
the center of high-technology industries and education,
machine-building, metallurgy and trade. At the same time
Dnepropetrovsk is not only famous for its commercial industry, but
also for its green hills and steep history.
The
central streets of the city were renamed during the Soviet time in
honor of the outstanding revolutionaries. (And it is interesting,
the largest of them is in honor of German figures.) So the central
street of the city has the name of Karl Marx. It is a very
beautiful, wide and long parkway, which stretches east to west
through the central part of the city. It was founded in the XVIII
century and parts of its buildings are the actual decoration of the
city. In the heart of the city is Zhovtneva square, on which is the
majestic Cathedral that was built by order of Katherine II (Russian
empress) in 1787.
There
are some remarkable buildings on the square: the Museum of History,
Diorama "Battle for the Dnieper River (Second World War)",
and also the beautiful park where you can rest during hot days of
summer. Walking down the hill to the Dnipro River, you will arrive
to the large Taras Shevchenko Park (which is on the right bank of
the river) and on Monastyrskiy Island.
Unfortunately
"old town" does not exist in Dnepropetrovsk anymore. Many
historic buildings and churches were destroyed in the World War II
and in Stalin's communist times in the 1930s. However some
street-blocks on the main hill (the Nagornaya part) between Pushkina
Avenue & Embankment, and sections near Globy and Shevchenko
parks have been untouched for 150 years. An evening walk through
those parts of the city will bring you a lot of joy. Most of apartments
for rent and hotels located in those old districts and close to the Dnipro
river - a wonderful creation of nature that keeps the climate mild
and the air fresh. And from any hill (there are 7 in the city) you will
find a beautiful view of the Dnipro river, islands, parks,
outskirts, riverbanks and hills.
Looking
through the pages of Dnepropetrovsk history, one can say that the
people are the greatest treasure of the city. This treasure can
never lose its value.
We
are happy to invite you to Dnepropetrovsk, to this hospitable and
amicable city, to the atmosphere of comfort, joy and cordiality
